My house was full of girls. But there was one boy. I remember one year he got a castle from the "Little People" series... back when "Little People" were little peg-like sticks with a head instead of these round ball-like people those new toys are now.
The castle came with a moat and draw-bridge and everything and I loved to play with the princess on the tower.
But there was also an ugly green monster puppet that lived in this cave near the moat. My sisters and brother would slip their hand inside and the monster would come out of his lair with a roar, mouth wide, teeth glimmering in the light (of my imagination), and I would cry and cry!
I remember them showing me the rear end of the green, rubbery monster, and they told me to put my hand in it! No way am I sticking my hand in that dark hold inside the monster! It was the scariest toy in my childhood.

My two oldest boys were very quiet that particular cold afternoon in December. I remember turning the corner and seeing a Buzz Lightyear figure standing on top of a fort as a smirking train conductor led an unlikely army to the front. My boys could make a game out of anything in those days. Scary toys, funny toys, broken toys all seemed to find a place in their battle for world conquest. I can still remember how they counted around 60 toys when it was time to sign the peace treaty and go to bed. Mr. Potato Head was the winning general if my memory serves me right.
