Thursdays The: Featured Post Winner

Congratulations to Dani on the winning post.

The words flowed from his mouth as if second nature. He'd said these same words so many times he'd lost count. Day in, day out, he repeated them to himself. At first they were strange to him - as though someone else should be saying them. They felt foreign on his tongue and he had to put effort into making the words sound natural as though he meant every syllable.

But tonight he was used to the words. They sprang from his lips so naturally that even he was convinced he thought them up himself. Now he was no longer himself. He was the bird who spoke these words. The feathers they laid on his shoulders and headpiece now seemed attached to his skin and he was looking through new eyes, the bird's eyes. The night was majestic through these new eyes. He felt like he could spread his wings and fly.

Then the lights dimmed, curtains closed, and he was himself again, dressed in feathers of yellow and orange. He could feel the paint on his face again, like a hot thick layer of skin.

This was the night he knew he was a real actor.

On with the show?

The curtain falls
as do her eyes.

After all
she's an actress.

Despite the pain...
Despite the sorrow...

She's a professional.
The show must go on!

But the curtain has fallen,
and reality has returned.

"Oh, God. This is hard."

The moments before became a meditation. To be authentic, she needed her spirit to soar away from her ordinary. As the drums electrified the air, she stepped out on the stage and raised her arms to the sky. No one watching could deny her immersion into the spirit of the dance.
