Mondays Meme: Featured Post Winner

Congratulations to iLikeToWrite for his winning contribution to accompany his precious photo. I couldn't resist, they fit so perfectly together:

"Oh wooly worm, we meet again. How have you been since I saw you at the doorstep on that sunny day?

Do you remember when I saw you in the midst of the humble moss? On that great stone wall? Even at my back door?

You seem to follow me like a shadow, or maybe its just my imagination. You aren't camera shy, that's for sure. In fact, I think you come to me just to have your picture taken, and who am I to deny a worm's mighty quest for fame? :)"

The littlest of treasures are found if only we open our eyes to see them. As I remember these sweet creatures, I am filled with awe and joy.

The little bear, so fuzzy and brown - shows unexpectedly when I am down. There he is, again, I see. Come, little bear, share your world with me.

"Hey Mommy! Look what I found!"

I remember it like it was yesterday. He had such childlike wonder in his eyes as he came running in and asked if I wanted to come see neat creature he found outside.

A wholly worm. I couldn't deny it. I shared his fascination with the creature. How much it resembled a friendly caterpillar more than a worm, in its typical slimy stereotype.

"Want to take a picture, Mommy?"

My husband had started calling me "Mommy" ever since our son was born. He hadn't even learned to say it himself yet. Somehow I find it fits, though - he is more like another son to me sometimes.

We had about 10 active, wild boys running around our yard. Climbing, racing and challenging each other on a beautiful spring day. I remember how my 5 year old son caught everyone's attention one by one. He was crouched down looking at the tiniest green frog who took temporary residence in our playhouse. All these big, rambunctious boys quieted for a little while as they watched a tiny frog hop around with fascination. It even became kind of quiet for about 10 minutes which is a rarity when boys are around. How sweet to see these boys join in to enjoy a little bit of nature together. That oneness with nature ended soon when one boy wanted to smack the frog with a tennis racket. Many of the other boys became "knights" for the frog and went to battle to keep him safe. Then my 5 year old called in the big guns (Me) to break up the arguing boys. The peace was nice while it lasted.

After 14 long dry hot years in AZ, we moved to NC. On our first vacation in the area we went to Boone in the west side of the state. It was in the Smokies..which growing up back East I adored. Each year they have a wooly worm festival in Banner Elk. Taking my then very young children to learn all about them was a huge blast!! I miss those days when they were little..I am lucky to have a couple youngs ones still..but the older ones are all grown up and on their own now..where does the time go..bittersweet!!
