Tuesdays Tale: Featured Post Winner

Congrats to JarieLyn for her winning contribution. This week was very hard for me to choose a winner. But JarieLyn's writing had me at the edge of my seat and I wish I could read more!

"Cheryl and Jennifer had been wandering around the fair all day long, flirting with boys, trying their luck at winning stuffed animals, taking pictures in the photo booth, looking at exhibits, and eating food at various vendor booths. Day was turning into night and they decided to give their aching feet a break by riding the ferris wheel.

The ride attendant commented how lucky he was to have such two gorgeous girls on his ferris wheel.

The girl's were a little creeped out by him. After all, he must have been in his 30's. He had long scraggly hair and sported a goatee. His arms were bony and tatooed.

Once the girl's settled into their car, the ride rotated them up until all cars were filled with riders. Round and round the wheel went in steady motion for a period of time. Then the wheel gradually slowed, and eventually stopped to let the riders off. One by one, down, down, down, and off the people went until finally no one was left except the two girls.

But the wheel didn't stop. Up and around they went again, and again. Panic rising, they shouted at the attendant to stop and let them off. The attendant said he wasn't letting them off until they agreed to go out with him. The girls, thinking it was a joke didn't say anything. Up and around again and again, each time going faster than the last, fear settling in.

The girls watched as the attendant walked away and left them going round and round. Feet dangling, fear rising, the girls screamed and shouted, tears beginning to form."

I'd never seen one like it. It was pink and the seats had little covers on them. Mommy said it was a Fairy-Wheel but I didn't see no fairies. I wish you coulda been there, Jean...it was beautiful and then I got on it, just like all the big girls did. I sat there and it went higher and higher.

I coulda stayed on it forever....but I never did see a fairy.

Hmmmm.

The grandkids all brought me to this same spot to remember a ride that I had over 40 years ago. Looking up at this ferris wheel, I find all those nervous and happy emotions coming right back to me. It was on a slightly more beat up ferris wheel where my life truly began. A boy of seventeen at the time grabbed my hand and took me for the most joyful ride. I can almost feel the warmth come back to my cheeks when I think of our first kiss on top of that ferris wheel. A touch of romance can stay with a girl for a very long time.

I loved Ferris wheels when I was little. I'm not sure why, for I am terribly afraid of heights. Perhaps it was the sensation of safety and fright at the same time.

It was the smell of cotton candy and fresh popcorn that called out that day. The clatter of the rides as they spun around encouraging the previously eaten fair treats to come up for a second time could be heard along with the carnival music that was unique in itself. Patrons ran around the area clutching onto the treasures they had won while trying their luck at the various games of chance. A stray child ran into the back of me as I attempted to take in the multi-faceted scene with all of its sensory overload.

As I turned to verify that all was ok, a child no more than 5 stood with their back to me and their face turned upward. Following their gaze I saw what mesmerized them so. Large and circular, brightly painted and lit with pulsating lights stood the grand ferris wheel; the centerpiece of any carnival. The child stood motionless their eyes fixed directly upward as if in a trance by the majesty that this object resembled to them. The candied apple that had once been their prize hung limply from their hand towards the ground. Their one desire was only for the chance to experience this wonderful creature that stood before them.

The air was a bit chilly. Early September can be that way. The smell of caramel corn and funnel cakes still lingered in the air from the night before. Folks starting to stagger out of trailers, heading for steaming cups of coffee. Trying to gear themselves up for an other day of hawking their games and rides. The occasional cow lowing and nickering horse broke the silence as the fair came to life for one more day.
