Thursdays The: Featured Post Winner

Congratulations to septembermom on the winning post.

The desire to exclaim was there but hushed quickly by fear and awe. What they were seeing was difficult to comprehend or articulate. They had no time to really process the force in front of them. For those few seconds, they were like chess pieces waiting for the master move. Spurred into motion, they drove quickly as the rumbling overpowered their senses.

The day had been pretty clear for a day out at work. The heat wafted up off the ground and I felt like every particle of dirt in the air was clinging to my sweaty skin as I drove my tractor around the field. Then the hot wind would pick up and rush even more dirt at me and I curse the air, glancing at my watch to see how much longer before I was aloud to return home for a shower. Tonight I was going out with friends and I was not letting my parents weezle that out of me. The moment they knew I was going out, they'd make some excuse why I shouldn't go.

"There's too much work to be done in the morning. You need your sleep." or "Those kids don't have any idea how to work and they're going to be a bad influence on you." Never in their lives could they imagine it the other way around. Brandy was attending classes at college and working harder than I'd ever imagined working when it came to brains. She would get so angry if her grade came back lower than she expected and hoped for.

My parents would never understand that kind of work. They're idea of work was digging holes for fence posts and driving tractors in the sun until your skin falls off from all too much exposure. Jack would be preaching to them if he had a chance, about skin cancer and other diseases they were forcing upon me.

Just then my thoughts were interrupt by a spectacle before my eyes and I forgot all that had been running through my head. A swarm of dirt was rising off the ground and into the sky. I estimated about 40 feet up as I watched, eyes wide. Dust storms were a common thing around here, but this one was gigantic. I think I may have seen something like this from afar before, but never imagined how big it really was. My consciousness was overwhelmed by awe for a moment as I watched the spectacle, but then pure horror overcame the awe as all the dust began to come down. "Ah, here we go." I said to myself, tightening my lips hard to prevent the grit in my teeth to no avail. "Yeah, Dad, this is the life, out on the tractor...this is the life!"
