Thursdays The: Featured Post Winner

Congratulations to Heather T. on the winning post.

The day was a warm one and she could feel the presence of the sun as it rested upon her braided hair. Dirty face and bare foot, she ran out into the big field where the horses roamed.

She was a quiet girl, barely twelve years old and yet, she knew where her life would lead her.

With a camera in her hand, she watched those horses and dreamed of the day that her daddy would let her run like them.

Free to roam.

The mare stood over her foal, ready to lash out at anything threatening her baby. Her stallion grazed in front of her, secure in his strength. But the mare couldn't forget the terror of the night, when the wolves came to the meadow. They almost took the foal, had faltered before her parents' fierce teeth and hooves and retreated to the hills. They would be back tonight, and the mare wanted to be ready.

"The horses must feel it," James muttered as he stretched out on the blanket. Married for just over three months, James and Amanda still had big dreams even if they were swallowed up by debt. On this Saturday afternoon looking out on the horses, they envied the horses' peaceful way of moving through their day. "That calm is a gift of nature, you know? I may not be a philosopher, but I think we should try to grab on to that calm just like them," he whispered as he caressed Amanda's cheek.
