Thursdays The: Featured Post Winner

Congratulations to De Lly Dilettante for her winning contribution:

The tiny thing quivered. Its anxiety ballooning to the proportions of magnifying power of the lens used to examine it. The stink of cheese puffs in their warm damp breaths was just as pervasive as their prying eyes. A total invasion of privacy.

All of the contributions were wonderful for this post. It was really not easy choosing, but this one kept making me smile when I read it. I could "totally" picture the look on the bugs face :)

The boys are peering carefully at the insects crawling across the cobbled courtyard. "There goes a ladybug," they exclaim.

The boys examined the ants closely and watched as they scurried along the mortar of the brick driveway. They were amazed by the heavy loads the ants carried. Some hauled dried grasses twice his body length and others carried round crumbs of food, and still others carried dead bugs bigger than the tiny ant who carried it towards it's ant hole. The boys watched, mesmerized for an hour or more wondering about the life of the ants.

The ant sizzled in the reflected sun delightfully. I don't know why it always made me smile. How foolish it may seem, the joy I can get from something so simple. My mother once shouted at me that it was cruel and to stop. But it seems so seldom that I get to find joy in the little things. I'm always being shuffled off to soccer practices, art classes, band sectionals, and if not that- it's my father telling me to study. Sometimes I like to hide away, and just sit with a friend to do something silly, like roasting ants. It's my way of getting away.

The boys were amazed at how much the lens could shrink things. The finger he was examining might have belonged to a pixie, it was so small.

The lens hadn't come with an instruction leaflet.

Conversation from the third grade...

Look, I'm older than you and a grade up on you, so when I tell you this is a grasshopper, that's it.

Well, it looks like a katydid to me, our teacher brought one in to school yesterday.

I knew that all along, dummy, I was just testing you.
