Thursdays The: Featured Post Winner

Congratulations Heather on the winning contribution.

The morning felt fresh, like crisp Spring air. I heard little giggles coming from down the hallway and knew that it was time to wake up, to get out of bed. I couldn't bring myself to do that just yet, it's so much more fun to wait and listen.

Tippy-toe, tippy-toe, giggle-giggle-giggle, creeeeek.

I can feel his presence just inside the bedroom door, I pretend to snore. He thinks that he's being sneaky as he creeps closer and closer. Peeking just enough through my eyelashes to see his little round face, nose to nose, he watches me...and I snore one more time, just before I grab him up. We laugh out loud and I tickle his little round belly. As we sit back and sigh out all of the laughter, I notice the little toes on the little feet that once fit in a little box on a small piece of paper and I can only hope that time will be gentle on me.

GREAT find for today's theme :) - for some reason I just love feet photos.

The day the doctor took you out of me, cesarean-style, was hardly what I had imagined. I couldn’t stop shaking from either the medication in my system, the fear in the process itself, or the finality of my new title of Mom. Dad held you first, with the tender love of a ready-made father. He brought you gingerly around to my head, into my line of vision.

Up to my face I could see your forehead full of blotchy pink angel kisses, and your paper-thin lips pursed tinier than I thought they could be. Your ear lobes were furry like a different sort of mammal, and you were glossy and sticky looking all over.

You - cleanly swaddled tight, and I in recovery, I held you for the first time. Still shaking beyond my control, intrusive IV hooked securely to my hand, first awkward attempt at breastfeeding ensuing, I fiddled with the white hospital receiving blanket. I wanted to get it all just right. I wanted to photograph this moment in my head and in my heart – the moment that I fully realized you were mine to love unconditionally, forever. I wanted to bond with you thicker a bond than ever a mother before.

Fiddling with the blanket through it all though, I concentrated on this the most. Exerting all my left energy to get into that nurse’s proficient wrap, with almost an urgency - I wanted to see the parts of you that for some reason, to me, made you most real. I want to welcome you into my world, to greet you with such a loving message; freeing you from the blanket, reaching my lips down to kiss your perfect, sweet, new little toes.

The toes,
Those toes,
That nose,
They grow!

You grow
We go
I might forgo

Spin round,
Upside down,
Come back
Toddler toes.

The little toes usually have little "owies" on them from playing around without socks or shoes, but he usually doesn't mind so much. They follow him wherever he goes, even if they get a little skinned up on all his adventures. But the moments I love the most are when he is at rest, sleeping so sound, again that little angel that I knew heaven sent to me once upon a time. The beautiful joys that are little boys keep me a happy mom.
